Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
