The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a major part. With luck starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
