A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was requested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
